What is residence and what types of residency are there in the EU?

By applying for Bulgarian residence, you will receive the right to reside, work and live in Bulgaria. The Residence Permit issued in Bulgaria will allow you to travel across the whole of the European Union, with certain restriction depending on the particular member state. In short, what you are allowed to do in Bulgaria, you will be allowed to do in each EU country.

You should know that once you have obtained Bulgarian residence:

  1. You can travel freely and settle in any EU country without permission (some restrictions apply)
  2. Work legally in other EU countries (some restrictions apply) and pay taxes where you live,
  3. Buy properties in EU countries,
  4. If you run an enterprise it may legally work in other EU countries,
  5. You can study in EU, (in many cases for free),
  6. You are commonly insured, and the health care insurance is valid in the entire Union,
  7. EU residents are protected abroad by the embassies of the home EU member state.

Once you have obtained Bulgarian residence, your family will also be able to apply for residence and live together with you. Your whole family (wife, husband and children) will be able to come, live and work in the EU. By getting EU residency you and your family will receive greater chance for personal and professional development. Your children will have a brighter future as all EU countries offer high quality education and career opportunities. Starting business is as easy as just having the idea.

Once you have received Bulgarian (EU) residence, you will be able to start your own European way of life. You will do your business and/or be employed by an EU employer. Since there are no borders within the EU countries, your vacation at the French riviera will be no problem at all.

In order to get the permanent residency, you need to go through long term residency (i.e. you must apply for long term residency first). Then, after 5 years when you have obtained your permanent residency, you can apply for citizenship making you a Bulgarian citizen. Once you have received Bulgarian citizenship you will be allowed to vote. Other EU countries will give you the full respect of an EU citizen.
